Glaciers In Iceland – Euro-Trip Day 16
Today was the day that we finally got to get up close and personal with the Glaciers in Iceland.
Day 16 was the one day that we had planned a concrete activity with a tour company. While researching visiting Iceland in the winter time, one of the activities that caught our eye was the ice caves. They seemed like a very unique experience, and one that we definitely did not want to try on our own. Unfortunately because of all the rain we experience during the week the cave was flooded with about 6 feet of water. We ended up changing plans with the company and went with Plan B – Glacier Walk.
We started the day being woken up by a massive rain and wind storm. We decided to take it easy and have a nice breakfast at the cottage. We started our day of exploration by making our way to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. It is at the foot of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier where a number of Hollywood moves have been filmed including a Batman, Tomb Raider and two James Bond movies.
Following our stop at the glacier lagoon we made the drive down to meet our guides from the GoEcco team to begin our glacier walk. The glaciers in Iceland are some of the largest in the world, and you really get a scale of them as you start walking on them. If you look at the picture below in the middle left part of the frame you can see another tour on the glacier. From where the picture was taken, it would be about a 30 minute walk to that spot. This was just the toe of the glacier too – the glacier stretched for many more kilometres past what you can see. Its such a massive, ancient piece of the world.
