Exploring The South Coast Of Iceland – Euro-Trip Day 14
Day 14 was all about exploring the south coast of Iceland. We checked out of the Hotel Selid and began the 5 hour 400km drive to the Stafafell Cottages. During the planning of our trip this day was put aside as an “exploring, free day.” We could stop whenever and wherever we wanted. There were not any specific things we *had* to see. We had a few spots along the way we could check out if we felt like it. It was a very mellow day. Well that is until about 5:30pm when the sun went down, and the wind and the rain unleashed a nasty storm on us. It was a bit of a harrowing drive in the dark, but we eventually made it through safe and sound.
First up on Day 14 was another stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall. This time we wanted to beat some of the crowds and catch some early morning light. While we didn’t get the epic sunrise we were hoping for, we still managed to snag a couple of keepers.
We left the waterfall at the same time half a dozen tour busses arrived and unleashed a torrent of tourists. We drove, we explored, we enjoyed. The landscape was stunning. The sun kept teasing us with patches of beautiful golden light. We saw this one set of cliffs with thousands of birds flying around.
We saw a random road sign off the main highway and decide to venture down it. It took us to Sólheimajökull – “The Incredible Shrinking Glacier”.
We walked around and explored for a bit before heading back on the highway.
From here we headed towards Vik and the black sand beaches. We stopped at Dyrholaey and walked around the area around the lighthouse. Following that we headed down to Vik and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara. We cut our stop there short after we getting pelted with hail.
Following our stop at the beach we continued driving east where we past this waterfall right off the highway.
After a quick stop we made our way to the glacier Svínafellsjökull. Although not as popular as Jökulsárlón, there was a small glacier lagoon at the foot of the glacier. The sun was setting and the light fading quickly as we walked around the area. After taking a few pictures we kept on driving east towards our accommodation for the night.
We had a great exploring the south coast of Iceland, and although the weather was not the most cooperative, we were very much looking forward to the following day when we would get to walk on one of the glaciers.
